How to Measure Your Head for a Cap

Tummanharmaa Muumi Classics -farkkulippis

A well-fitting cap should not press at the temples or move whenever you turn your head. To choose a size, you need a soft measuring tape and a mirror. If you do not have a tape, use a non-stretch string and measure it against a ruler afterwards.

Measure in the right place

Wrap the tape around the point where the inner band of a cap normally sits: slightly above the eyebrows, above the ears and around the widest part at the back of the head. Keep the tape level. It should touch the hair or skin lightly without being pulled tight.

Measure twice. If the results differ, take a third measurement and use the two readings that are closest together.

Account for hair and adjustment

Measure with the hairstyle you expect to wear most often with the cap. A thick braid or hair tucked underneath can change the fit. An adjustable back strap adds flexibility, but it cannot correct a cap shape that does not suit you or a cap that is clearly too small.

If your measurement falls right at the end of the listed size range, also check the cap's construction and adjustment method. A soft cotton cap will feel different from a stiff, heavily structured model.

Three checks when trying it on

  1. The front band does not press into the forehead.
  2. The cap stays in place when you turn your head gently.
  3. There is still some adjustment room in both directions.

If a cap quickly leaves a strong pressure mark or causes discomfort, the fit is too tight. If it lifts away from the ears or rotates easily, adjust the strap or consider another model.
